An extraction is often indicated for a tooth with decay too large to restore, if the tooth has an abscess or trauma.  Sometimes it is indicated to extract a permanent tooth prior to orthodontic treatment.  We perform both baby tooth extractions and simple extractions of permanent teeth if indicated.

Post-Operative Instructions:

  • Have your child bite on the provided gauze for 30 minutes or until bleeding  is controlled
  • Remember that your child’s cheek, lips and tongue may be numb (‘asleep’) for approximately 2-4 hours after the procedure
  • Avoid sippy cups, bottles, straws and pacifiers for the first 24 hours after the procedure
  • Avoid salty, spicy, acidic or crunchy foods for the first 24 hours as this may irritate the extraction site
  • Administer children’s Tylenol®(acetaminophen) or Motrin® / Advil® (ibuprofen) for any discomfort
  • Do not allow your child to participate in strenuous activity for the first 24 hours as this may increase bleeding from the site
  • A small amount of oozing is normal; however, if bleeding becomes heavy have your child bite on a gauze or tea bag for 15 minutes
  • If bleeding continues or is heavy call our office immediately

Lingual Frenectomy:
The common term “tongue-tied” or “ankyloglossia” is when the fold of tissue under the tongue (the frenum) restricts the tongue's range of motion interfering with breastfeeding and speech.  A frenectomy is the removal or surgical clipping of this tissue.
